Over 30% of adults in the ACT experience psychological distress, with young Canberrans the most affected. At the NHC we have mental health services provided by a caring team of professionals who are dedicated to improving mental health in the Canberra region and will always lend a patient ear when you need it most.
The NHC isn’t set up for emergency support. If you need professional help urgently, please contact crisis services such as Lifeline (call 13 11 14 ) or Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636), or call 000 for emergency services.
A caring doctor is a great place to start
The role of a GP in mental health is often understated. They are not only the first point of call for many patients, but also offer a continuity of care and help direct patients to additional expertise where necessary.
All our GPs undertake training in mental health to the same rigour as physical health. They take the time to understand your situation, ensure that your privacy is completely respected, offer counselling and provide the expertise to help guide you back to your best.
Standard GP appointments are available to both members and non-members.
Mental Health Care Plans
Our GPs are also able to help with Mental Health Care Plans.
Following an initial conversation, the doctor will assess whether your situation requires further clinical support. If so, they work with you to create a Care Plan which is tailored to your needs. This includes a review of your situation, establishing clear goals and referrals to additional mental health services where required. The Mental Health Care Plan is also linked to Medicare support, and when approved by your doctor will allow you to get Medicare rebates for some or all of the expert consultations included within the plan.
Your doctor will advise you if they think a Mental Health Care Plan is right for you and co-ordinate an appointment for you to work through it together. As a more detailed procedure, this service is only available to members.
Canberra Psychology Services at the NHC
Within your Mental Health Care Plan, the doctor might recommend that you will benefit from the help of a psychologist.
We currently have two part-time psychologists at the NHC, who work closely with our GPs to take patients through the steps of their Care Plan and on the path to feeling better. Both are qualified to Master’s level and have a long history of patient care within the Canberra region. Mylie Sell is located at our Higgins clinic and Natalie Evans works at Chisholm.
Psychology services – as with our other allied health services – are available only to members.
With significant demand for services it is possible you may not be able to see one of the NHC psychologists because of our long waiting list. Please talk to your doctor about your options for services that are right for you.
