April 7th is the World Health Organisation’s World Health Day and this year’s theme is ‘Universal Healthcare Coverage for All’.

This day shines a spotlight on the importance of ensuring access to quality health services for people regardless of their location or economic means.

At the National Health Co-op, we believe that no one should have to choose between good health and other life necessities. This is why we’re working to strengthen Australia’s world-class Medicare system by building Australia’s most extensive patient owned provider of primary healthcare services. As a non-distributing co-operative, the NHC reinvests all revenue back into its operations to provide additional services to its members and for the continued growth of the business.

Our model contrasts with the ‘corporate medicine’ model which, like other corporate businesses, is run to generate a profit for return to shareholders. The NHC works on the principle that in areas critical to the success of a community, such as healthcare, a business model that directs its revenue to activities that benefit its members has the ability to not only uplift those members but also effect significant social and economic change for the benefit of the entire community.

With now over 40,000 members, the NHC is expanding quickly and continuing to drive our overarching goal of providing access to affordable healthcare for all Australians. If you are already a member, thank you for actively helping to shape a better future. If you haven’t joined us yet, we’d love to welcome you to better healthcare together.
